ABOUT THE RACE

Nestled in the heart of Barbour County, Philippi, West Virginia, is a historic small town with a big personality. Known for its role in the first land battle of the Civil War and its charming covered bridge—the oldest and most iconic in the state—Philippi also embraces the delightfully weird. It's the birthplace of Ted Cassidy, better known as Lurch from The Addams Family, celebrated every August with Lurch Fest, a spooky-fun street fair filled with live music, oddball contests, antique hearses, and limited-edition “Lurch merch.” With museums, quirky legends (like 19th-century mummification), and a welcoming main street, Philippi offers a colorful mix of Appalachian grit, history, and eccentric charm—making it a perfect launch point for gravel adventures.
Riders starting in Philippi will find a wide range of gravel routes, from smooth riverside grades to steep climbs and rugged doubletrack. The Arden Falls Lollipop offers a scenic, beginner-friendly loop, while the Mail Pouch Tobacco route packs serious climbing into a short distance. Longer adventures like Pea Ridge Passage and The Lurch Loop explore remote corners of Barbour County, with creek crossings, rocky farm roads, and stops at Teter Creek Lake and Audra State Park. Expect a mix of surfaces and a few technical sections—but the views, swimming holes, and post-ride ice cream or craft beer in town make the effort well worth it.
